WWS was bustling with programmes this week and a shocking amount of 638kg was collected! Unfortunately, our goal of collecting 0kg waste seems to be unreachable – at least, just yet… To truly achieve this goal, perhaps we need the government to have more structured and mandatory laws and school syllabus to include advocacy and education on waste management and disposal, as well as for every resident (through our CCs and RCs perhaps?) in Singapore to practice social responsibility and to have the willingness to change their bad habits of leaving trash around.
An increasing number of illegal fishermen were sighted this week. Our members engaged them as usual, however, one group of young fishermen verbally abused our members when they saw them approaching!! The disregard for the law is absolutely saddening and disappointing to see in some of our youths today. A few of these groups were even seen standing/sitting across the railings or under the bridges, which leaves them at risk of falling into the water and also serves as a bad example to others. There have also been several instances where illegal fishermen complied and moved away after being engaged, but were then found fishing at another illegal spot – the usual cat and mouse game played.
A lot of algae continues to be seen in Marina Reservoir and a few other concerning sights were reported this week. Members found dead fishes, this week, usual items like a kite and a signboard for framing services. Boat training was also done at Marina. A total of nine programmes were conducted this week (Schools and Corporates) with one school cancelled due to the “haze” condition. Members patrolled and continued with strong support.
