Dear Friends,

OVERVIEW

“Where did these come from?”

Collection from Bike Patrol

Three rounds by our bike patrol at Jurong Lakeside Garden in less than 2 hours and we picked up lots of litter. Besides the usual plastic bottles and bags, cans, masks and glass bottles, we found items like marker pens, lunch-trays, slippers, mint boxes, glass cleaning liquid bottles, lighters (is this not a non-smoking park?), liquor bottles. Each must have its own interesting story. All in all, we collected a total of 133 kg for the week from the three locations; Marina, Lakeside Garden and Punggol Waterways.

There is a need for more concerted effort in building awareness among the residents and park users about the importance of keeping our waterways, canals, drains and streets litter-free, particularly for our nation. This can be done through education (learning journeys), public posters and constant dissemination of information through social and public media. Perhaps with the coming World Water Day celebration in March we will have more opportunities to share, show, up close and personal.

Summary of Activities conducted for the Week:

In summary, the following activities were done for this week:

  1. We conducted 0 CSR and 1 VIA program which were attended by 32 participants, and together they collected a total of 57 kg of litter.
  2. A total of 11 members participated in a Facilitator training at MacRitchie reservoir in preparation for a VIA programme with a school to be conducted in March.
  3. This week a total of 59 members were involved in CSR/VIA programs, talk, patrols, administration, housekeeping duties, and training.
  4. The total trash collected by the patrol groups was 76 kg.
  • Boat Patrol. Total: 3 boat patrols were carried out; 2 at Marina and 1 at Punggol.
  • Bike Patrol. Total: 2 Bike patrols were carried out; 1 at Marina and 1 at Punggol.
  • Pedal Boat Patrol. Total: 1 Pedal patrol was carried out at Marina.
  • Foot Patrol. No foot patrol was carried out.

Once again, we sincerely thank all members and volunteers, who came for patrol or for facilitating the CSR/VIA programs, for your time and dedication to the task. Without your support (even during this festive period), we would not have been able to achieve this. Young and old, we all must care for our environment. Sustainability is the only way forward.

Oh, by the way, if you are members or friends of Waterways, we are collecting all unopened CNY goodies to be shared and distributed to our cleaning partners. Closing date this Saturday, 24th Feb 2024.
