Dear Friends,
It was a great and eventful week for Waterways Watch, with bookings from corporates good during this one week of school vacation period. The weather was generally kind to us although we had one programme where the participants could not go out due to lightning warning the whole afternoon. Instead, they were entertained with a presentation and two of our Kahoot challenges. Naturally, it was disappointing for the 62 participants from UBS and the 14 WWS Facilitators as this cannot fully replace the experience of our outdoor waterway clean-up activity. The week also had one postponed programme due to the weather/haze.
The earlier part of the week had us play host to 29 delegates, organized by the Taiwan Ministry of Environment. We conducted the whole session in Mandarin and it was a very fruitful engagement both for us and the participants, with them having asked many questions during the Q&A portion.
This week we also had a meeting with a group of students from Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) who are doing a module project with us and also a meeting with a lecturer from Temasek Polytechnic looking for opportunities to expand their student programme with Waterways Watch on sustainable environment.
We are glad to say that the overall amount of trash collected this week was reduced by 88kg, from 447kg to 359kg, although that does not necessarily mean we are cleaner and littering less. Unfortunately, we do still see a lot of trash in the reservoir. Additionally, we have noticed an algae bloom occurring in our Marina Reservoir for the past month and we hope that monitoring and perhaps some measures can be taken to ensure it does not get worse. Apart from this, our kayak leaders also conducted a closed-deck kayak practice session for our kayak members and we had a good turn out of 14 members and 3 leaders over two sessions (morning and afternoon). They found it to be an insightful and good practice session. Boat training for new drivers was done on Saturday and Sunday, with four trainees involved.
