What’s going on at Pang Sua?!
Dear Friends,
Thankfully, the haze slightly lightened up and improved last week. Due to the school’s concerns regarding the haze, we carried out two customized River Monster programmes for Farrer Park Primary School. Instead of the regular clean up activity at Marina Reservoir, WWS facilitators headed down to the school to conduct a full indoor programme consisting of our Singapore Water Story presentation and Kahoot games to reinforce the learning points for a total of 6 classes. The customized programme was well received by the students and teachers and they thoroughly enjoyed the Kahoot games as well.
On another note, the team at WWS was thoroughly shocked by the amount of litter that our Pang Sua patrol team encountered on Saturday, especially under the Bukit Panjang Flyover. Once again, they hit yet another record high for the amount of litter collected, 40kg including 81 glass bottles and some shattered ones, most of which were found under Bukit Panjang Flyover. Pang Sua seems to be getting further and further away from our goal of picking up 0kg of trash. The team even had to end their patrol early as they ran out of trash bags while collecting, which is an unheard of situation. Something clearly needs to be done and we urge the relevant authorities such as NEA, LTA and perhaps SPF to step up and take action against the severe littering problem in this area, especially since photos taken by our members reveal that members of the public are drinking alcohol under the above mentioned flyover, possibly at night. Waterways Watch wrote an email to Mayor Alex and the Town Council to share our concerns.
Orientation for the month was well supported with 21 new potential members of which 13 were students from Zhenghua Secondary School as we had carried out an outreach booth at their school in August to promote volunteerism.
