“Alamak! Are we truly improving in our social behaviour in Singapore?
Dear Friends,
This week our members patrol alone at Marina, Punggol and Lakeside reports a very substantial increase in litter pickup. We appear to be losing our battle with our public anti-litter campaigns. Photos tell a thousand words! Such sightings cannot be allowed to carry-on with meaningless campaigns and maybe even with ineffective enforcement. To think we are a Clean City is just giving us a false sense of good health index. We are far from this goal. At this rate, Semakau island will be completely filled even ‘Before 2035’!!
In a recent public run -the Great Green Run, one of our members who participated sighted a blue bin provided but inside the bin, lots of different trash were thrown in- cans, plastic bottles, banana skins, trash bags etc. so much for Sustainability. Hopefully not all bins provided accumulated all types of litter and had segregation done. It would be a wasted opportunity if we did not take this event as an opportunity to promote and engage, educate all participants the true meaning of sustainability while doing healthy running. It would have been a great event to even promote our Return Right Campaign. It is not about just running for a cause. It is about understanding the value and importance of the cause and why we must all do our part everyday in the face of climate change, rising sea water and the soon to be ‘no more semakau!’.
Sustainability requires responsible behaviour everyday, by everyone!!

It was a very sad week for the Waterways Watch Society.
This week, we lost one of our most dedicated and passionate longtime members Mr. Philip Chan. Philip passed away on Wednesday morning. To many of us, he was a brother, member, friend and chief dessert chef. Philip had an important role in Waterways, always responsible for the maintenance of all our boats, buggies and even bicycles. He had a true love for “his garden”, growing many fruit plants and making sure members often cherished the rewards of the fruits, making his famous desserts for us all. We will all miss you greatly Philip, especially your ‘pet’ squirrels. Our sincere condolences to Philip’s family and may he rest in peace. Always missed and never forgotten!
